Hooo boy, you just opened up a can of worms!! But let me make something completely clear before I respond. I am an Army Officer, and when I became an officer I took an oath that I take very seriously. That oath contains (among other things) the statments that I will support and defend the constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign or domestic; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States. When former President Clinton was in office I heard a lot of officers badmouth him, and that really bothered me. The man was the President of the United States, the Commander in Chief of all armed forces, and I heard my fellow officers (who took the same oath that I did) deride him constantly. Very disturbing. I believe very strongly that whoever holds that office deserves my support. I don't have to agree with the President, but whether I agree with him or not is a moot point. I am sworn to carry out his orders and will do so without question.

Having said all that, understand that my opinions are mine alone, that I am speaking in my role as a private citizen, and that my views are in no way to be construed as an official position by any governmental organization. I am first and foremost a conservative, who happens to mostly vote republican. I generally vote republican because my personal views are most closely aligned with the republican party. It is a philosophical difference, I believe. A liberal will generally believe that the government is best suited to solve big problems, while a conservative will generally believe that large problems are best solved at the local level by people that are familiar with the local version of this big problem. An incredibly broad generalization of my views can be summed up this way: I believe that liberals empower the government while conservatives empower the individual citizen. I understand very well that the government has a number of roles that cannot be played by individual citizens at the local level (foreign policy, for example), and I also understand that without a sizeable national government, I would be out of a job. It's a tough balance...swing too far one way and we live in a totalitarian regime. Swing the other way too far and we live in anarchy.

My 2 cents.

Personally, I just dont understand liberalism at all. I believe liberalism is popular because it is easier, involves hardly any effort (as big government does everything for you), and is more convenient to the individual. It also involves less (if any) personal responsibility and does not take into affect any personal morals, christian ethics, or anything of that nature. Atleast that is what I seem to observe.

I have also heard that military servicemen are about 7 convservatives for every 1 liberal. Or something like that.

hey Ryan did you hear that the prosecuter in the county that Ruby Ridge is located in declined to prosecute the FBI agent that shot Weaver's wife even though there is more then enough evidence to convict that the agent violated 3 state laws and 6 Federal? So tell me are we sinking into anarcy or becoming totalitarian? Either way the constitution is being trampled. Heck even the congressmen want to trample all over the first amendment and give you no say in anything that effects you.

I'm a registered Libertarian in Massachusetts. Yes, we are few and far between, but growing. To me, if you want to side politically with a group that will support the Constitution, this is the only one to go with. Republicans are becoming just as bad as Dems (i.e. McCaine) and will just as quickly take your rights and money and give it to someone else.

Libertarians want governemnt to ba as small as needed. No bloated agancies and beaurocracies, etc. etc. The only thing we need government for is for a congress and to maintain an army to go and fight wars. The only taxes we should have to pay are to support these jobs, and these jobs only. That would come to about 2% of everyone's paycheck. Last time I checked, they were taking 16%. Plus Medicare...plus Social Security...plus FICA.

Seems most people have forgotten or are just accepting what is going on around this country now. I don't care if Bush's tax cut DEMOLISHES this country. What's right is right. They are taking too much tax, and if our booming, oh-so-good economy was built upon taking money from people who worked for it, then it was some liberal dreamland, and it's time ot wake up. It's time to start over.

Last thin I wanted to touch on was guns. These are our last line of defense from becoming Mexico. Once they are gone, the gov't is free to do whatever they want. And they are trying their hardest to get them. In Mass, you can't even buy a new pistol unless it is one of the sellout companies that said they would develop some type of trigger lock. How is my right to keep and bear arms not "infringed"? It's righ in front of our faces folks, but when will we band together to do something about it?

MikeC,
Actually, If you want to truly support the Constitution, you should be a Federalist (amazingly the party still exists after 200 years). Libertarians are close, but they still have a little way to go (a true libertarian doesn't like a local government any better than a federal government, and they are both only necessary evils). I fit more closely with the Federalist party, but seeing that there is no way any Federalist will be elected locally in my area (let allow nationally), I usually vote Libertarian or Republican, depending on the venue.

If you combine the Populist party, with the Libertarians, with the Federalists, throw in some Independents, and the true Conservative Republicans, you would find me somewhere in the middle. I think most of the political reformers of today have excellent thoughts and ideas, and I wish there was a way they could all come together and form ONE party to compete with the Libs and Conservs of today. I am just sick to death of the Clinton News Network (CNN) and the liberal trash-TV of today.

I have heard that radio and internet are mostly conservative oriented. And television is liberal. While newspaper is somewhere in between.

The republican party thinks you are garbage unless you are a big-contributing millionaire and the dems believe in throwing more and more money at systems and programs which are failing, inefficient, and usually corrupt. I guess I consider myself an independent but more power to you whatever your political philosophy is. I do know that as long as the dollar controls what bills become law that we are all basically screwed.

ryan you said nothing about anarchy or totalitarinism. But you did support the killing of a man that tried to fight against it. The thing seems to be support for killing citizens without a trial, and killing more who fight against it when the government does not like it. You see in the constitution you are given the right to overthrow a government gone bad in fact you are incouraged to. But yet the government that was in power durring the murders in Waco and Ruby Ridge does not want to prosecute the murderers only the people that speak out against it. That is a fall into anarchy that preceeds totalitarionism. So in a long winded missive I give you a perfect example af liberalism. Conservitivism would not have allowed this great injustice to go on this far, but as you all know Congress is a liberal.

Since when did being liberal become bad? Just because Rush tells you so? Take a look at what dubya is doing do you really think he gives a rats a** about us no he just want to butter the buiscut of the people that finance his campaign BIG oil and BIG buisness. Republicans (the party not the voters) generate all this propaganda that they are going to let you keep more of you $21.50/hr to get your vote then when your kid goes to college you got to get a third mortgage on your house it'll be too late. And when your eighty and need to either eat or buy your insulin you'll start thinkin' hey mabe socialized medicine wasn't a bad idea. But by then it will be too late because all they wanted was your vote and you bought their crap hook line and sinker.
People we gotta use our heads. More and more we're givin'up our rights because something sounds good. The war on drugs-give me a break. Sure sure take my poperty without due process invade my body and examine my urine lock up my neighbor for years for growing a plant? Just because I'm scared my kid will smoke a dube before prom? Wanna talk about tax and spend this war is costing us BILLIONS and its making no difference. So we're losing our rights paying for it-just 'cuz some politician doesn't have the guts to say that the emperor wears no clothes. Meanwhile there are at least half a dozen kids at the high school that can get you dope faster then they can get a six pack.
Less government interference? I got people looking at my pee, folks trying to tell my daughter what to do with her uterus but not letting her get a condom before some joker attacks her with his Johnson. It's not all black and white folks. Just my .02 (OK $1.50)

I guess I would be Indepentant leaning to republican. I vote on the issues not on party. I do not like big government. I am a backer of managing yourself. Of course there is a limit to that of course. And how much money the government takes out of my check every 2 weeks is crap. Why did we leave England again. For far less taxes that is for sure. And double taxation. This dang tax relief. He** is it getting taxed by Utah. Oh ya don't forget tax with out representation. That is how I fell about my taxes. State and Fedrel law makers pass all these bills. Do I know what they mean or what they are. No. That is my fault tho cuz I could find out.
I am a firm beliver in standing for decisions. The 90's had unparreled growth. Also had unparreled bankrupcy. Why, people do not have self control. Oh I got a raise lets go buy something. Hello people cus'out big bussiness. They get richer and I get poorer. Hello quit spending. If you have 3 morgages. Stop buying murchendise. Stand for your own actions. If you can't put your kid through school. Whos fault is that. Surly not the government. Not big busness. Either you don't make enough money or you made decisions that put you in that perdiciment. Who am I to penelize someone who made it big. Isn't that why a lot of people moved here. What about guns. People guns don't kill people kill. Yes those people are what we made them. They don't have to be responseable for what they did. There must be something wrong with me. Fix me. No. You did something wrong. Stand for what you did wrong. Granted it is not always cut and dry like that. But come on. Maybe I am one of those waccos that live in the west. but wait where can I live in the west the government owns almost 80 percent of Utah. Let me have someone else stand for my actions. I will just pay them. Hey maybe they will let me live with them too.

Alot of good points made here, but here is what I have to say, America has the worst government in the world, except when you look at every other government in the world. We may complain, we may argue, but there is no other place on earth that I would rather live. I hate the amount of taxes I pay, but I do so with a smile on my face. I don't think that our congressmen, senators, judges, cops, etc have a firm grasp on reality or what is really happening in the real world. We talk about the war on drugs, which is a tragic example of how out of touch our gov't can be. A "war", I'd call it the modern version of the spanish inquisition. Full of rhetoric, lies, deception, improper punishment, and responsible for the incarceration of thousands of people for possesing marijuana(a drug that is far less deadly or harmul than alcohol, and yes alcohol IS a drug). All the while the "war" rages on, costing billions of dollars, and not impacting drug use one bit.
But back to the real subject, I'd have to say I'm an independant. I voted for Ralph Nader, not because I'm a tree hugger, but because I don't think that our gov't should be bought and paid for by corporations and wealthy individuals. Democrats and republicans are very guilty of being sponsored(I thing they should have to wear logos on their suits, so that we know who buys their votes, because we sure dont)I want honest people in office, and I don't see any. I was extremely disappointed to see campaign finance reform die(not that I was optimistic)but because it was the only token effort made in recent time to curb legal corruption of politicians. And no one can tell me that a congressman or party that recieves large amounts of money from a single entity will not be influenced by what that entity wants to happen.

I guess what I am trying to say is that there are many problems with our gov't, and change will happen. I am only 20 years old, a college student majoring in history, and very concerned with what has happened to MY country. All I can say is that in 20 years, when my generation takes over, there will be many changes to how our gov't acts, and due to our experiance as youths, these changes will definately take place.

Thats my $.02 and i'm stickin to it.

Republican. Why? I think people should have to work for a living and not let me work for them. I also want to keep my guns. I come from a Democratic state(Maryland). But let me explain. There are 22 counties in the state. In our last Governors election 20 counties voted Republican. Baltimore city (Go figure) and 2 other counties voted Democrat. The state house and senate has a lot of conservative Democrats in it. After the election it was found out that dead people and out of state people voted for the Gov. So many in fact that there was enough to turn the election the other way. But it didn't and he's now in his second term. I sit out here in farm country, in the sticks, and have no say at the state level. In the meantime I have people in the city deciding how I should live my life. Seems every time you turn around they're ramming new taxes or gun laws down our throat. Recently legislation flew through both the state house and the senate to teach the NRA's gun safety programs in the schools with a lot of support on both sides. It was vetoed by the Governor because he said he didn't want more kids to develop an interest in guns. He took a program that the public wanted and could potentially save lives and shot it down because of his own personal anti-gun agenda. Last year we had a surplus of almost 700 Million from taxes. We weren't told where they spent this nor were we given a tax break this year. In fact taxes went up. This comes after we as a country are trying to recover from a past President with lousy morals who's laughing in our face all the way to the bank. Our biggest problem is laziness and a lack of discipline. Only in America can you get voted into the Senate, as a representative of the people, in a state you've never lived in. I hear a lot of people dogging President Bush calling him a "Good Old Boy" etc. I don't hear them complaining about that tax refund, however, they're just talking about where they're going to spend it. Give me a break. People need to wake up and vote for good leadership, in whatever party. We need people in office that will serve as a role model for our children. I believe that is what we have right now. Not as an example of all the things not to do which is what we had. Just wish, we as a country, would stop following our politicians around like sheep and would hold them accountable for their actions. I don't think this will be an issue with our current President the first real leader and role-model we've had for years.
