Subject: What's everyone runing for computers? IP: Logged
Message: What I mean is...
Is every one using Windows 95,98,2000, or Mac, or Linux...
Just curious. I'm going to give a plug for Linux because I recently started using it and it works great, although I still go back to windows for some MS Money and Office stuff once in a while. But I am sure that will change.

If you use oFfice then you'll love Star OFfice. It runs on linux and uses a lot less resources. Its made by Sun and I believe its free to download. Could you imagine if M$ let you download Office for free? ahahhahahaha

Message: You can go to www.tccomputers.com and check out their processor/motherboard section. I am hnot saying to buy from them, it's just a good place where you can see what chip goes with what board and for about what the going rates are.
I never liked AMD when they came out. I heard they had a lot of floating point processing problems, but now I hear a lot different. And they are much cheaper than Intel's. Also, www.tomshardware.com has a lot to say for standing up for AMD.

Finally going to put a wireless addition to the family with my Dell (yech) Laptop.
I used to be a straight Intel person...since the switch to the AMD's, i'll never go back. Less problems, less maintenance, less cost, much more performance.

Message:
Just remember, overclocking can be very detrimental to your CPU's health. When they finish the silicon lot (chip), they run it through basic benchmarks to find out what speed it's capable of...safely. It depende on the quality of the silicon, quality of the die, and quality of the fab-plant as well.
Cooling is another issue as well as the powersupply in your system. El-Cheapo (or "Bargain") cases with chinsey little fans won't cut it on overclocking. 3D-Cool, Coolermaster (two of my favorites...many more out there though) are among the top rated fans. Sparkle is also one of the top rated (UL Listed - yes...look for it on your powersupply), and recommended powersupplies.
Overclocking a 533 to 800 isn't impossible, but it depends on the lot that they came out with.
Example: Years ago (on the Celerons) there was a specific lot that you could overclock to almost double it's rated speed.

Message: Bernd... All of that is true, I would just like to add that I believe that on all Celerons, the clock multiplier is fixed, but you MAY be able to change the bus speed from 66 to 100 MHx as long as your memory is PC100 also!!! This is a lot like trying to get free ponies out of a stock truck!!!!

Message: Celerons can be overclocked, the clock multipliers are on the motherboard not the chip. 64 mb can be had for $50 at pc 100, pc 180 64mb is around 100. MikeC there is a thing known as a Firewall that prevents the problem you speak of. try www.zone alarm.com it is free to individual users. Just download and install, Microsoft also has a download for win89 and up including win 2000 that can fix this issue too. Also you can hide behind a proxy server or a csu-dsu on a dsl line. kraw be glad your bud is a fan nut, yours will run where others will turn tail and run.

I had an AMD P200 w/64 MB RAM minitower at home, but gave it to my father to give to a financially challenged aunt in the hopes she'll be online and accessible via email soon. There was at least one that spoke of asus and abit boards spoke well of wd hard drives and smacked on maxtor that has disapeared. or was that some of your censorship due to someone not agreeing with you???? I have watched this site for some time now and everytime someone hits on something you don't like you kill on thier 1st amendment rights. so many people on here talk about how great this site is but yet you trample on them as if they are nothing. remember pal, without people coming here and linking to your advertisers you won't have the money to keep this going. I can think of many that have quit posting on here due to a censorship issue with you and expect to find many more that will in the future. I wonder if you have the stones to answer this and better yet if you have the stones to put back all the posts you have have so eroniously deleted. Of couse if you and bernd don't agree with this post you will delete it too right??????
