Subject: Cable And DSL users!! IP: Logged
Message: I read this in the paper today, High Speed internet providers are going to start charging $80 to $100 A MONTH for the internet. (Cdn Price) I don't know what the prices are in the States.
The internet providers states that we are downloading to many things for free and we are taken up too much bandwidth. If this is the case, they can take my high speed modem and shove it up their $#@&ING ASS. I'll go back to dial-up.
Later,
Anthony

Message: Well you are paying for bandwidth but think of it from their standpoint. They have to pay for their bandwidth too. If their customers are each using more bandwidth on average that means they have to purchase more themselves. This translates to higher costs on their end per customer. At this point they have 4 options...
1) Limit the max bandwidth per customer in hopes of lowering the average overall
2) Raise the monthly price for each customer
3) A combination of both by allowing different speeds at different prices
4) Keep everything the same while incurring increasing costs eventually going bankrupt and closing all operations like many dsl companies have.
The DSL connection that powers the dodgedakotas.com servers costs several hundred US Dollars a month. This is the real cost of bandwidth. Those $40/month deals are based on the assumption that most people only go online to check their email and maybe view a couple websites.

Message: I guess that'll teach them to "assume" anything!
I pay $50 a month for DSL on a 40,000' loop to the central office. I get no where NEAR the bandwidth that DSL provides due to the super long loop. Guess I'm just helping to lower the averages! hehehe

Message: Just a local provider using Paradyne's ReachDSL equipment. I had 256k at the interface box, but my connection hops around from 192-256.
It's still faster than dialup ... for about the same as I was paying for a 2nd line and dialup service. Can't complain tooooooo much! ;o)

Like with dial up you could click on that icon and it would tell you your transfer rate and connection speed

Message: Ok I work for Earthlink in the Vendor Relations Department for ADSL lines.. I think I can pritty much cover all of the questions.
1. No there is no way to test your actual speed that you are connected to the CO. The only way you would know that is if you could get into who ever your ILEC's (phone company) system and find out your port speed. That's the connection speed that ADSL can reach upto. When you test your speed on DSL Reports it shows what speed your connected to them. So that adds alot more hops and slows your speed down. But that shows your true browsing speed.
2. Cable is actually alittle faster at downloading but slower at uploading the DSL. That's why most online game servers are on DSL but only the crappy ones are on Cable.
3. Blizzard can actually be on a ADSL line but SBC would have to be his local phone company. They would put him on "Project Pronto" which basically increases your distance to unlimited. Although your speed would suffer you could still get ADSL service.
4. DON'T GET SATALITE!!!!! OMG!! they at last coun't they had 2 satalites that Earthlink could use and one of the satalites was broken and being repaired and the other satalite wouldn't respond. It's like space cowboys.. but not. Anyway bottom line is don't get DirecPC for a while like a year. It's to new and VERY complicated. If for some reason you decide to get it anyway. Make SURE when the installer comes out to install your dish that you do NOT sign anything until you can connect to your internet using that satalite. They have been known to put in the hardware but not do the install correctly or use the wrong equipment and leave. Because you signed the paper they won't do anything else with out charging you. READ WHAT YOU SIGN!
I think that's everything let me know if you have any other questions about ADSL/Broadband.

Message: SDSL is the way for me. :-) I never had a problem in a year and a half. What speedtest does is download a 10MB file and you see the speed on your ftp screen. I ran this and it took 111 seconds to get 10,240,000 bytes. This is my max speed for the distance i'm at. The next upgrade will have to be a T1. :-(
