Ok, so now everyone has or is one the way to getting their thunderforms...here is an idea, UPGRADE the rest of your system! Q logic makes custom kick panels called Q forms, which replce your factory kick panels, are color matched, and hold a speaker and tweeter, so they are completely functional and look really cool too.

I think the running price on these is alittle over 200.00 plus shipping. Ive been working on it and can get free shipping and save quite a bit off the price too. Email me if you want in. Or post if you have a comment, question, etc.

Just an opinion...

But does any else feel that since these fit in the kickpanel (which is right next to the door speaker by the way) you really don't gain much by adding these to a Dak?

I mean c'mon... the tweeter is too low to do any good (proper tweeter placement is up high near ear level since treble is "directional" unlike bass which is "omnidirectional"). Also, what good is having another 5 1/4 or 6 1/2 speaker location right next to another 5 1/4 door location? It's not like you are really going to need more midrange/midbass in that area anyway.

I don't mean to "poo-poo" this product (I'm sure it is a quality piece), but I just don't see the need/functionality/logic versus the cost. True, you could get it just to say you have it.. but I guess that is why everyone has their own opinions and preferences.

Personally, I would take that cash and upgrade to better door speakers and add a really good set of tweeters in the upper door panel (which can be flush mounted for a "factory look") But that is just my 2 cents.

Most competition level audio systems use some sort of custom kick-panel to house a set of components. The previous message stating that high frequencies are directional and low frequencies are not is completely correct. However, optimal tweeter placement is NOT high on door panels or in sail panels. The Q-Forms are designed so that the tweeters point towards the drivers' ears. Tweeters mounted up high are too close to the driver on his/her side producing a harsh tone, and often are not directed at the driver, but rather face eachother and meet around the gearshift. The reason that the kickpanel location is ideal for speakers is because it creates a uniform path length (or at least as close as possible) between each speaker location and the listener. When tweeters are mounted high in door panels, this path length difference is great, and poor sound staging is the result. If you close your eyes, and try to point to where the "stage" the music is being performed on, you should point to the top center of your dash. With A-Pillar or sail-panel mounted tweeters, the "stage" seems to be on either side of the car. This concept is widely accepted, and a simple browse through the internet will yield a great deal of information on sound staging, path length differences and kick panel locations.
Customized kick-panel enclosures fabricated from scratch run $600+. However, Q-Logic provides a great product to reduce this customizing cost. I don't mean to sound like a salesman, but I own a set of these, and it was the best upgrade I ever made to my system.

These custom enclosures are certainly not for everyone. They require the purchase of a component set, which itself neccessitates an outboard amplifier. This gets pricy rather quickly, but if you crave great sounds out of your truck, there are few alternatives. However, most audiophiles probably know most of this already. So, if you're sitting there thinking who the hell cares about "staging", I just want a decent set of speakers for my truck, read on:

A simple upgrade to replace your stock speakers will have dramatic results for a small price, and is satisfactory for most people. This avenue is a good one for those seeking quality sound at a low price. If anyone is interested, I'm sure Jonas could set up a group buy for some replacement speakers. Send him some suggestions on brands you would be interested in!

I hope this helps to clarify some issues.....

Ok... if you say so...

However, I have NEVER had an installer on any of my vehicles recommend anything like this to me... especially for "tweeter placement". And I have NEVER had an installer try to mount a tweeter in the kickpanel to make for a "better soundstage".

For the most part, the tweeter installs I have seen are a bit higher than that. Some have been on the dash near the windshield, in the A pillar, and on the upper doors...

But like I said before...everyone probably has their own opinion on a product like this. Personally, I still ain't convinced that it is "necessary"... then again, it ain't like the Dak has "optimal" locations to mount amps (if you wanna keep it looking stock) to power additional speakers.

Therefore adding this component in addition to the locations already available in the doors and rear quarter panels just sounds like overkill to me...but hey, I ain't trying to set my Dak up for "competition" (there are way better vehicles to do that in...LOL).

Oh well.. anyways I'm glad to hear that you are happy with yours. But for me... I guess I will pass.

I ordered all the stuff to do my stereo installation this weekend, and now I find out that there ARE Q-forms for the Dakota. All I saw on Crutchfield were the ones for the Durango, and I wondered if they would fit. The AI Research site points you to the Durango Q-forms when you want to look at Q-forms for the Dakota. Makes sense since they are the same platform.

I'd like to have Q-forms to avoid putting speakers (and running wires) in the door, but it's too late for me. I got 6-3/4" woofers to go into the factory location, and the Q-forms only take 5-1/4" woofers. I'll survive...

I've been looking into the Q-forms and they will also take a 6 1/2 or a 6 3/4 but it's gotta be a shallow mounted one. Infinity makes a pair of 6 1/2's that're pretty nice and only run 80 bucks at Crutchfield.
